DIFFERENT TYPES OF SURGERY

The use of surgery for spinal cord compression will vary depending on the nature of the problem. If the problem is a tumor of the spinal cord itself and the tumor is still relatively small, surgery itself may be curative.2 The limitation here is that tumors of the spinal cord itself are often discovered fairly late, after the tumor has grown in size and is damaging delicate structures. In the case of a focal infection such as an epidural abscess, the treatment may require a combination of medications and surgery.3 In this situation, surgery is used to drain any pus and to stabilize the spine if needed.
